Cairo with Kids: The Good, the Bad, and the Unforgettable

Cairo is chaotic, fascinating, overwhelming, and absolutely unforgettable. Traveling here with toddlers isn’t always easy, but for many years, Cairo was our son’s absolute favorite place in the world! Between the epic pyramids, wonderful people, and unique experiences, there is so much to love. But there are definitely a few things families should know before visiting.

The Bad: What to Know Before You Go

1. Crossing the Street Is an Adventure

Traffic in Cairo is no joke! In some areas, crossing the street feels like a game of timing and bravery, with few helpful traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. Add a toddler who wants to run in every direction, and it can be stressful. Hold hands, stay alert, and use safe crossing points whenever possible.

2. Playground Safety Isn’t Guaranteed

We learned this one the hard way! Our two-year-old went down a playground slide and broke the slide in half. At another park, we encountered a HUGE snake. These experiences definitely made us more cautious about where we let our kids play. Inspect equipment, supervise closely, and don’t assume every playground is well maintained.

3. The Salesmanship Can Be Overwhelming

Around tourist attractions and busy markets, you’ll frequently be approached by people selling souvenirs, tours, and other services. Many interactions are friendly, but the constant attention can become exhausting when you’re already managing a tired toddler. A polite but firm “no, thank you” goes a long way.

4. Things Can Feel Disorganized

Cairo doesn’t always run on the schedule you might expect. Traffic, uneven sidewalks, and unpredictable travel times can make simple outings feel complicated, especially with a stroller. Keep your itinerary flexible, plan fewer activities each day, and leave plenty of time for breaks.

The Good: Why We Loved Cairo

5. The Pyramids Are Epic

Seeing the pyramids of Giza in person is an experience unlike any other. They’re enormous, fascinating, and an incredible way to introduce kids to ancient history. Even little ones who don’t understand the history can appreciate the sheer scale of these amazing structures. Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable shoes!

6. The People Are Wonderful

One of our favorite things about Cairo was the people we met. We experienced so many warm interactions and moments of kindness. Traveling with kids can open the door to wonderful connections, and these little moments often become some of our favorite memories.

7. The Food Is Fantastic

Cairo is a wonderful place to explore Egyptian cuisine. Try koshari, a hearty mix of rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, and tomato sauce, along with fresh baladi bread and ful medames. There are plenty of new flavors to discover, and meals can become an adventure of their own!

8. The Experiences Are Truly Unique

Cairo offers experiences you simply can’t recreate elsewhere. From ancient monuments and bustling markets to local food and vibrant neighborhoods, there’s always something new to discover. Even when kids are too young to understand the history, they benefit from experiencing different cultures, sounds, foods, and ways of life.

Our Tips for Visiting Cairo with Kids

  • Keep plans flexible: Traffic and unexpected delays happen.
  • Prioritize safety: Be extra cautious around roads, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces.
  • Pack the essentials: Bring snacks, water, sunscreen, and wipes.
  • Allow downtime: Cairo can be overstimulating for little travelers.
  • Embrace the unexpected: Some of the best memories happen when plans change!

Is Cairo Worth Visiting with Kids?

Absolutely! Cairo isn’t the easiest destination for families with toddlers. The traffic, infrastructure, and constant sales pitches can be challenging. But the incredible history, wonderful people, delicious food, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences make it worth considering.

For years, Cairo was our son’s favorite place—and that says a lot. If you’re willing to embrace a little chaos, Cairo might just become one of your family’s most memorable adventures.
