10 Things to Do in Muscat, Oman with Kids

Muscat was one of those destinations that completely surprised us as a family. Between the colorful souqs, dramatic mountains, turquoise water, and beautiful beaches, there was something for everyone. Our favorite by far was the beachβ€”although we quickly learned that the beach comes with some unexpected little visitors! Here are 10 things we loved doing in Muscat with kids.

Mutrah Souq, Muscat

1. Explore Mutrah Souq πŸ›οΈ

Walking through Mutrah Souq is an experience for the whole family. The winding lanes are packed with colorful scarves, spices, frankincense, jewelry, souvenirs, and traditional Omani treasures. Our kids enjoyed looking at all the unusual things in the shops, while we loved browsing for souvenirs. It can get crowded, so we found it easier to explore at a slower pace and take plenty of breaks.

2. Stroll Along the Mutrah Corniche 🌊

The Mutrah Corniche is perfect for an evening family stroll. The waterfront is lined with traditional white buildings, fishing boats, and dramatic mountains, making it incredibly scenic. We loved simply walking along the water, stopping to look at the boats and taking in the views. It’s also an easy place to combine with the souq and fish market.

3. Shop for Beautiful Omani Rugs 🧢

One of my favorite shopping experiences was visiting the rug shops. The colorful rugs and intricate patterns are beautiful, and the shopkeepers were happy to pull out different options for us to look at. Even with kids, it was a fun cultural experience because they could see the different colors, textures, and designs up close. And, of course, a rug makes a much more memorable souvenir than another toy!

4. Spend the Day at the Beach πŸ–οΈ

The beach was our favorite by far! The water was gorgeous, the sand was beautiful, and it was the perfect place for the kids to run, play, and cool off. One funny warning: watch out for the black crabs! We had the very unexpected experience of getting surrounded by them on the beach. The kids thought it was hilarious, but it definitely caught us off guard! Despite the crab invasion, the beach was easily the highlight of our time in Muscat.

5. Let the Kids Run at Qurum Natural Park 🌳

After several days of sightseeing, Qurum Natural Park was a great place to let the kids simply be kids. There are green spaces, walking paths, gardens, fountains, and playground areas where children can burn off some energy. We especially liked having somewhere that wasn’t another scheduled attractionβ€”it was an easy place to slow down and enjoy an afternoon together.

6. Find the Fountains β›²

The fountains and landscaped areas around Muscat provide a fun change from the desert scenery. Kids naturally gravitate toward the water features, and they make for some great family photos. We found that adding these little stops into our sightseeing days helped keep the kids interested when they were getting tired of looking at buildings and historical sites.

7. Visit Bimmah Sinkhole πŸ’¦

Go early in the morning! Bimmah Sinkhole is absolutely worth the trip, but it gets busy. We found that arriving earlier made the experience much more enjoyable and gave us a better chance to appreciate the incredible turquoise water and dramatic limestone surroundings before the crowds arrived. Older kids may want to swim, while younger children can enjoy exploring around the edge. It was one of the most unique natural attractions we visited near Muscat.

8. See the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque πŸ•Œ

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a beautiful introduction to Omani architecture and culture. The enormous prayer hall, intricate details, chandeliers, and gardens are impressive even for kids. It’s a good stop for families who want to incorporate a little history and culture into their trip, although you’ll want to plan around visiting hours and the required dress code.

9. Visit the Fish Market 🐟

For a glimpse at everyday life in Muscat, take the kids to the Mutrah Fish Market. It’s colorful, lively, and very different from the typical tourist attractions. Kids who are fascinated by animals will probably enjoy seeing the variety of fish being brought in by local fishermen. Go earlier in the day for the liveliest experience, and then continue on to the Corniche and souq.

10. Explore Al Mouj Marina β›΅

Al Mouj Marina is a great place to experience the more modern side of Muscat. We enjoyed walking along the waterfront, watching the boats, and stopping for food. It’s especially nice in the evening when temperatures cool down. After a busy day of sightseeing, it was an easy place to wander around without having to stick to a strict itinerary.

❀️ Our Muscat Family Favorites

If I had to narrow it down, the beach was our absolute favorite, followed closely by Bimmah Sinkhole and wandering through Mutrah. Muscat was a great destination with kids because we could balance cultural experiences with plenty of time outdoors. And if you visit, just remember: go early to Bimmah Sinkhole and keep an eye out for those black crabs at the beach!
